Researchers placed collars on 90 elk to assist them to better monitor and learn more about elk in western portions of North Dakota.

“Everything went very well as far as capture and collar. It’s a pretty significant research project of a large sample size,” Jeb Williams, North Dakota Game and Fish Department wildlife chief, told the Grand Forks Herald. “We’re pretty excited about it.”

Crew members used a helicopter to find and capture the elk across eight different locations from the northern Badlands to the southern Badlands. They placed the collars mostly on cow elk as well as a few smaller bulls.

The ultimate goal is to assist biologists and wildlife managers in learning more about elk migration routes and habitat use.
