Oregon Airplane Crash Kills Two Elk

Roadkill is never a pretty sight. But it usually happens along a stretch of road or highway and involves a car or truck.

In northwest Oregon, it happened at an airstrip. The pilot of a small plane just touched down at the Nehalem Bay State Park runway when a bull elk ran in front of him. He tried to speed up and immediately take off again to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, the propeller and landing gear struck and killed it. A second elk then ran out in front of the plane and collided with the left wing. It too died.

Neither the pilot nor the one passenger on board suffered any injuries although the plane is a total loss. Fish and Wildlife troopers did salvage a lot of the elk meat.
