Elk NetworkNew Law to Better Protect Washington Elk

Conservation | June 10, 2017

A bill signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee calls on state agencies to carry out efforts to try to reduce elk-vehicle highway collisions in west-central Washington.

According to KPQ radio, vehicles killed more than 60 elk on Vantage Hill alone last year.

The pilot project calls for depredation hunts, general hunting and managed livestock grazing to try to keep elk away from roads.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates the Colockum elk herd numbers 6,000 or approximately 1,500 above objective.
