Elk NetworkKnow the CWD Regulations Before You Hunt

Like other state wildlife agencies, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) wants to ensure that hunters know about regulations designed to combat chronic wasting disease, also known as CWD.

“It’s important that hunters and other people realize the threat and the risk that this poses to our wildlife in the state,” John Vore, FWP game management bureau chief, told KTVQ-TV. “In other states, for example, where it’s been there for a long time, it’s reduced populations by 45 percent. In some cases it’s reduced populations by 20 percent a year.”

Vore added FWP does not want hunters to transport the brain, whole head or spinal column of a deer or elk outside Liberty and Carbon Counties where CWD previously turned up.

Be sure to consult the state wildlife agency’s CWD-related regulations where you live and where you hunt.
