Montana hunter legally harvested a wolf. That, in and of itself, is not so newsworthy but where it happened certainly is. It took place only one mile outside of Glasgow, Montana, which is literally hundreds of miles away from where documented wolf packs roam the state.

The closest established wolf packs are thought to be in Yellowstone Park, western Montana, northwest Montana or Canada.

“As I understand it he had permission and was out hunting coyotes and happened to see it and had a wolf tag with him and made the harvest,” Marc Kloker, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman, told the Great Falls Tribune. “We all think it was probably an oddball wandering through.”

According to the report, the wolf is the first taken in that part of Montana since wolves came off the endangered species list in 2011.
