Long-Awaited First Hunt

In From The Field, Youth by RMEFLeave a Comment

I have been waiting to hunt with my dad and his friends for years. Finally, when I turned 12, I was able to go and the trip lived up to my expectations. On the first weekend, it was a lesson in patience. We spotted some cow elk and I raised my rifle, but didn’t pull the trigger because I didn’t have a good shot on the vitals. The cow was moving from right to left …

Hunting With Big Brother

Our family hunts near our cabin not too far from home. My big brother, Joe, is a great elk hunter, so he offered to take me out on my first elk hunt. It was toward the end of the season and there was snow on the ground. He picked me up from school at 2 p.m. and we got to the mountains by 3 p.m. We saw a deer walking across the draw and he …

A week ago, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation received an email from Jeremy Nauta. He told us about his brother Joshua, who doctors said only had 4-6 months to live due to an ongoing battle with brain cancer. Joshua’s wish was to take his six-year-old son, Jaden, on an elk hunt before he is gone. We just received a follow-up email from Jeremy below. Congrats and Godspeed from the RMEF! The trip was more than …

Once a year when we hunt for bear. We go to a cabin and make it a longer trip but otherwise, we are out doing day trips taking a lot of turkeys, woodchucks and geese. I was three years old when my …

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation recently joined forces with the Foundation for Exceptional Warriors and Rowdy Birddog Outfitters to host a cow elk hunt for five veterans in north-central Utah. Four of the first-time hunters were from Utah with the other hailing from Oklahoma. KSL Outdoors Show featured the hunt (see video below). Rowdy Birddog Outfitters supplied the tags and guides. RMEF supplied the lodging, guns and volunteers. “There’s nothing I’ve done in more than …

Taylor’s First Elk

I had just turned 12 when I drew a youth limited entry hunt in British Columbia. My papa and I hunted hard for many weekends to try and fill my permit that was good for either an elk cow or bull. Then early one Saturday morning, my papa said he wanted to go and get a load of firewood. We were hoping while we were in the woods, that an elk might just show itself. …
