A ranger making the rounds at the Valles Caldera National Preserve in north-central New Mexico recently captured video of a large elk herd crossing the road.

The Valles Caldera is a 13-mile wide depression created by a volcanic eruption about 1.25 million years ago. It is known for its massive mountain meadows, abundant wildlife and meandering streams.

It is also one of the best places to hunt elk in New Mexico. Estimates indicate there are between 2,500 and 3,000 elk across the preserve. In addition to elk, the preserve is also open to hunting for turkey.
