One year after reintroducing elk back onto their historic West Virginia range, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now featuring the majestic animal on the cover of its annual wildlife calendar.

“And not only do we have an elk on the cover, we also have a big article in the back of the calendar about our elk restoration program,” Liz Akins, DNR employee in charge of the annual calendar project, told the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided funding and volunteer manpower toward restoration, research efforts and habitat work in helping return elk to the Mountain State.
