Breeding season is a magical time all across country. And that includes in the Appalachian Mountains along the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

“The elk rut season is happening right now,” Julena Campbell, Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokesperson, told WBIR-TV. “It’s basically the fall breeding season for elk. So, the bull elk in particular are feeling frisky.”

For those not familiar with elk or the rut, it is vital to keep your distance as bulls can be aggressive and territorial.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation assisted with the successful reintroduction of elk back onto their native range in the southeast part of the nation.
